Likely it is unique that Berlin has three operas: Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper und Komische Oper. As a lot of other things it is originated from separation into 2 parts.
The Eastern part had both operas in the old historical center and thus the Western part constructed its Deutsche Oper. Since the building of Staatsoper is under reconstruction the operas are shown at Schillertheater in Berlin-Charlottenburg. A return into its original location is expected in 2013.
There are several cinema centers under Cinestar, Cineplex and Cinemaxx.
The biggest one at Potsdamer Platz has 19 halls. Some cinemas as Cinestar in Sonycenter and Hackesche Hoefe show movies in English original version (in Germany it is usual to show movies in cinema/TV in a German language). A lot of cinemas show 3-D-films. There are also existing some special cinemas showing things not from the mainstream (e.g. Babylon in Mitte).
